1. Dark

It’s Netflix’s first German original series, Dark tells the story of four families whose secrets came out accidentally when they began looking for lost babies. It’s also compared to the other Netflix Hit show of Stranger Stuff for its thriller features. The series is split into four timelines, 1953, 1986, 2019, and 2052. This has a deep effect on one’s subconscious as to how time travel works and the various paradoxes of time travel. It doesn’t have any over-the-top special effects, but it has a decent storyline that stands in for the VFX. The writing is top-notch, too. It’s the bottom of the suspense, and you can’t leave that behind. It’s a respectable binge. Creators – Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese Stream On –  Netflix Year of Release –  2017 Star Cast – Louis Hofmann, Lisa Vicari, and Maja Schöne Total Season – 2 IMDb Rating – 8.8 Available Languages – German and English

2. Prisoners of War

Creator – Gideon Raff Stream On – Hulu Year of Release – 2009 Star Cast – Ishai Golan, Yoram Toledano, and Yaël Abecassis Total Season – 2 IMDb Rating – 8.4 Available Languages – Hebrew, Arabic, and English There’s something unique about Israeli action series — they seem to be smarter and more complicated than American films but also offering a seat-of-the-pants action. Yet “Prisoners of War” is more or less the ne plus ultra of the genre. Wow, it’s one of the best shows you’ll ever see, regardless of roots or genre. “Prisoners of War” inspired the original concept of “Homeland,” when Season 1 centered on the traumatic homecoming of two Israeli soldiers who had been kept captive for 17 years. The series doesn’t shy away from aggression (which rarely seems gratuitous), but it’s better to tackle murky emotional waters.

3. Spiral

The world of operation is noisy, but this French drama clearly stands out. Throughout the course of seven seasons (the first six of which are available in the United States), it has proven to be a delightful combination of “Prime Suspect” and “The Wire,” headed by the tormented Capt. Laure Berthaud (Caroline Proust), commander of a closely-knit team in a tough Parisian neighborhood. The core players also include the ruthless defense counsel (Audrey Fleurot), the upright judge (Philippe Duclos), and the manipulative prosecutor (Grégory Fitoussi). While each season follows a sell-alone scenario, the best part of “Spiral” is the way in which characters evolve over the years, always trying to touch a thin line between legal and illegal, convenient and principled, good and bad.

4. How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)

8. El Presidente

9. Berserk: The Golden Age

Creator– Shin Itagaki Stream On – HBO Max Year of Release – 2020 Star Cast – Erik Scott Kimerer, Max Mittelman, Sarah Anne Williams Total Season – 2 IMDb Rating – 7.0 Available Languages – Japanese and English The first adaptation of Kentaro Miura’s brutally violent and visceral Berserk manga, a 1997 TV series, is considered a classic. And while the first two films in this triptych, 15 years apart, get a somewhat scornful reception from most of the anime experts, their final offer is as enticing a watch as the genre has to give — and as brutal, too. This dark fantasy, set in a feudal world obviously based on medieval Europe, follows a sellsword named Guts, who is forced to join the paramilitary party called the Hawk Band after his leader defeats him twice in a row in a single battle.

10. Kill La Kill

Creator – Hiroyuki Imaishi Stream On – HBO Max Year of Release – 2013 Star Cast – Ami Koshimizu, Aya Suzaki, Toshihiko Seki Total Season – 1 IMDb Rating – 7.9 Available Languages – Japanese and English Kill La Kill is an action-adventure anime with grim twists. This tells the story of Ryoko and a living item of clothing she discovers. She, along with other colleagues, leads a whole school of people in search of her father’s killer. The art style is a little polarizing, but the plot is pretty sweet. Kill La Kill is loaded with plenty of conflicts — physical, mental, and psychological — enough to keep one occupied for the entire length of the 24-episode. All stereotyping is reversed when it comes to this anime: while the general framework is in line with industry trends, it also continues to disdain traditional norms mercilessly.
