Jujutsu Kaisen: An overview

Jujutsu Kaisen is a dark anime that deals with supernatural elements such as curses, spirits, and sorcery. The anime begins with the death of our protagonist, Itadori Yuji’s grandfather out of old age. Before dying, he tells Itadori to live a life so that he can choose how he dies in the end without regrets. Itadori did not have anyone else except his grandfather so he was pretty much alone now. At school, he belongs to the occult club despite his superhuman strength and athletic build. He refuses to join a sports club even after being asked to join by the teacher. In the occult club, the members pick up an object that is packed in bandages. Out of curiosity, they unpack it only to find a finger in it. It turns out that this is, in fact, the finger of Ryomen Sukuna, who was also known as the King of curses. The mere presence of this object in the open attracts curses towards it due to its cursed energy. When the other two members face fatal dangers, Itadori eats the finger, hoping that it might save them. Instead, he ends up getting possessed by Sukuna. For reasons, Sukuna cannot take over Itadori Yuji’s body. So, Itadori still has his awareness and higher control over his body. Knowing the threat that Yuji would pose since he ate a cursed object, the higher-ups want Yuji dead. However, Gojo Satoru presents a different deal towards him. He can live if he eats all the fingers of Sukuna. Once he has eaten all the fingers, Gojo wants Itadori to die along with Sukuna’s soul so that Sukuna does not resurface. The story then revolves around Itadori and the various characters of the anime who fight curses of different levels and exorcise them.

Jujutsu Kaisen: What are Curses and Jujutsushi?

The story of Jujutsu Kaisen is set in a world where curses exist. Humans emit both positive and negative emotions. Negative emotions like anger, envy, fear, etcetera often manifest themselves into curses. These curses are obviously bad news. They cause chaos and harm in the world thus destroying the peace in it. Curses are classified into different grades according to the threat they pose. Grade 4 is considered weakest following Grade 3 and Grade 2. Grade 1 possesses a high level of threat. There are special grade curses that are overpowered and need powerful sorcerers to exorcise them. Curses cannot generally converse. However, special grade curses can not only learn how to converse but also how to use their cursed energy against people. Curses are invisible to normal humans. They can only be seen by those who possess at least some amount of cursed energy in them. This special group of people can not only see the curses but also exorcise them. They are called the Jujutsushi. Jujutsushi literally translates to shamans. Like the curses, shamans are also classified as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-grade sorcerers. Likewise, 4th-grade sorcerers are the weakest and the first-grade sorcerers are strongest among them. There is special grade Jujutsushi too like Gojo Satoru who have unmatched powers.

Schools in Jujutsu Kaisen

There are only two schools where sorcerers can learn more about their powers. These schools are Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College and Kyoto Metropolitan Curse Technical College. After ingesting Sukuna’s finger successfully without any side effects, Itadori Yuji enrolls into Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College with Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki. Here, the young sorcerers work on their techniques and try to get stronger.

There has been no controversial flaw in the anime and most of the fans wait in anticipation for the next episode. Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Crunchyroll. New episodes come out every Thursday. You can also stream the English dubbed version on HBO max. Even after keeping aside the supernatural aspects of the anime, Jujutsu Kaisen is still a great anime. Gege Akutami’s idea behind the manga was to portray that there is no such thing as actual truth. Even if there is a truth no one knows it, be it a bad guy or a good guy. People only do whatever they do keeping their ethics in perspective. Making sure that nobody is right also ensures that nobody is wrong. Jujutsu Kaisen offers magic, bonding, and comedy altogether, packaged with the brilliance of plot twists. The series is unpredictable at some parts and mind-blowing at other times. Read:
