What will How Do You Live be About?
This anime movie is an adaptation of Yoshino Genzaburo’s 1937 novel of the same name. How Do You Live will be a coming-of-age movie, where the story follows a 15-year-old boy Junichi Honda, a.k.a Koperu. The movie will tell his youth’s story as he deals with poverty, spiritual growth, and his overall experience as he grows up. The novel is a popular work of literature in classical arts. Junichi Honda, a 2nd-year junior high school student, was given the nickname Koperu after the astronomer Nicholas Copernicus. Junichi’s father was a bank executive until his death, and his mother is a maid. After Junichi’s father’s died, he started living with his uncle. Junichi has great academic and athletic achievements, and he is fairly popular in his school. He experiences and observes many events in school life with his friends. The story follows each chapter where an uncle tells the story about themes like “view of things,” “relations,” “structure of society,” and so on. There is also a manga adaptation for the novel. Shoichi Haga illustrated the novel by Yoshino Genzaburo. The manga has the same name as the novel, and Magazine House published it on 24 August 2018. The manga was fairly popular, selling over 2 million copies upon its release.
When Will the Movie Release?
Hayao Miyazaki started animation work in July 2016. Studio Ghibli announced the movie in October 2017. In August 2018, Studio Ghibli producer and general manager Toshio Suzuki announced that they still need three to four years to complete the work. Though the progress didn’t take any hit due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, Toshio Suzuki said they are still far from seeing the final results. He also said that since they are hand-drawing everything, they need more time to draw more frames for the movie. In January 2020, the studio completed 15% of the movie. They also announced that they still need 3.5 years until they complete it. In May 2020, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Toshio Suzuki also said that they could only complete one minute of the movie in a month. That means for 12 months; they completed 12 minutes of the movie. So, in three years, they were able to complete 36 minutes of the movie. As a result, it may take more than three years to finish the movie. Hayao Miyazaki originally wanted the movie to release in the summer of 2020, near the summer Olympics in Tokyo.
